Let’s face it, life is stressful sometimes! And while it probably isn’t the healthiest strategy to reducing stress, coming home and pouring myself a glass of wine can get me back to center in a matter of two sips. Seriously, the sound of the cork popping? Music to my ears!

We live in the country and don’t have access to lovely private wine shops but let’s get real, who wants to spend $40 on a bottle of everyday wine?

So I’ve compiled a list of what we like to call our “Lazy Spoon House Wines”. These are easily accessible, delightful wines that are under $20! I didn’t base this list on anything other than, we’ve tried them, we liked them, and we often buy them.

Lazy Spoon House Wines

*In no particular order

1. Brotte Cotes Du Rhone La Fiole

This is a fruity, medium-bodied Grenache/Syrah from the Rhone, France region. At $20 it’s the most expensive red wine on the list. ($20CAD)

2. Sterling Vintner’s Collection Cabernet Sauvignon

A full-bodied red from the Napa Valley region in California, USA. It’s a nice wine to pair with steak or a roast. ($18CAD)

3. Wine Men of Gotham Shiraz

The Cabernet Sauvignon is good from this South Australian producer as well but I have a preference for Australian Shiraz. This wine pairs well with food but is also good on its own. ($17CAD)

4. Ruffino Prosecco

A sparkling wine from Prosecco, Italy that pairs wonderfully with appetizers. I love this Prosecco on its own and feel guilty using it for Mimosas. ($20CAD)

5. Lindemans Bin 65 Chardonnay

I don’t drink a lot of white wine but when I’m looking for something cold on a hot summer evening, this is my go to. It’s full-bodied with a creamy, soft finish and it’s super inexpensive. ($14CAD)

6. Goats Do Roam Red

Despite the fun name (get it, Cotes du Rhone), this South African red wine blend is actually pretty good! It’s medium-bodied and fruity. ($16CAD)

7. Anciano 10yo Gran Reserva Tempranillo

We discovered this Spanish wine while on vacation a couple of years ago and introduced it into the rotation. You might be unsure after the first sip but give it a chance, you’ll learn to enjoy it. ($17CAD)

8. Bouchard Aine & Fils Beaujolais Superieur

A light-bodied and dry wine from Burgandy, France that pairs well with fish and charcuterie. You could even serve this one slightly chilled. ($17CAD)

9. Ruffino Chianti Red

When you’re having rich pasta or a delicious pizza, this Chianti is your best bet at this price point. We almost always have this on hand. And when it goes on sale, we definitely stock up! ($15CAD)

10. Heritage Road Bloodstone Shiraz

This is a sweeter wine that isn’t as bold as your typical Shiraz. It’s a good wine to have on hand if you are having company for dinner and they’re not big wine drinkers. Very unassuming and light. ($13CAD)

Honourable Mentions around $25

  1. Penfolds Koonunga Shiraz Cabernet ($22CAD)
  2. Gentleman’s Collection Cabernet Sauvignon ($22CAD)
  3. Kim Crawford Unoaked Chardonnay ($23CAD)
  4. Peter Lehmann The Barossan Shiraz ($25CAD)
  5. Columbia Crest Grand Estates Cab Sauv ($25CAD)
