Ahhh… summertime. How I love spending endless days at the beach soaking up the sun, going for scenic walks, and sitting around the campfire. I spend the entire winter anxiously anticipating the summer months when the sun is shining, the temperature soars, and I can spend every waking moment outdoors.

And while my love for summer and all of its glorious activities is strong, protecting my skin from sunburns, dry skin and pesky mosquito bites is paramount.

This year, the Farmer and I have made a conscious effort to reduce the number of toxic chemicals we use in our household as well as on our bodies so I did my research and had the opportunity to test out a few products while on summer vacation. Here are my FAVOURITE all-natural skincare products that help keep my skin protected during the summer months without having to worry about applying harsh chemicals.

What I’m even more excited about is that all of these products are local or support people who live in my community. But don’t worry! If you aren’t local to me, all of these products, or similar products, are available to anyone in North America. Another conscious effort we’ve been making this year is to support local as much as we can so it makes me so happy to share these products with you.

My Favourite All-Natural Summer Skincare Products

Sunscreen

I wish I would have known in my twenties what I know now about the sun damage my beautifully bronzed skin was actually causing but it’s never too late to throw out the tanning oils and start using a good mineral sunscreen, right?

I’m pretty new to the mineral sunscreen scene but since I started reducing the number of toxic chemicals we use, I’ve discovered the benefits that mineral sunscreens hold over chemical sunscreens. The biggest difference I learned was how they protect you. A mineral sunscreen (made up of mineral ingredients) sits on top of the skin and physically blocks harmful UV rays while a chemical sunscreen (which contains a combination of several chemicals) absorbs the UV rays through a chemical reaction that transforms the UV into heat that gets released from the skin. Chemical sunscreens can take up to 30 minutes to work while mineral sunscreens provide immediate protection. And while you can definitely rub, sweat or rinse off the mineral sunscreen, it will last longer in direct UV sunlight.

Mineral sunscreens are made by many brands. Beware that some companies may use a combination of chemical and mineral ingredients in their sunscreen and claim to be a mineral sunscreen so be sure to read the labels.

I use the DermaPosh Essential Creamy UV Block mineral sunscreen as part of my daily skincare regime and what I love about this chemical-free product is that it is lightweight, silky smooth and doesn’t leave a white film behind. It’s formulated by my medical esthetician, Michelle Davis at DermaPosh, so I know it’s exactly what I need to be using to protect my face while out in the sun. I have two of these sunscreens on the go this summer. One is in my makeup bag and the other my beach bag so I can reapply throughout the day.

After testing out a number of mineral sunscreens, the Beautycounter Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion has become my favourite for overall coverage for me and the Farmer while enjoying time in the sun. It is also lightweight and isn’t overly greasy and I love that it leaves behind minimal white residue. The Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion provides SPF 30 protection and is water-resistant for up to 40 minutes. I recently started using Beautycounter and I will admit, I’m in love with their makeup also. Reach out to my friend Maria at @maria_clean_health_beauty to learn more about their clean products.

After Sun Care

I don’t know about you but despite the incredibly humid air, all of that time in the sun leaves my skin super dehydrated. So, I was over the moon excited when I discovered that local business owner, Kim Steeves with Cheekie Bath and Body had this incredible After Sun Spray that comes in a variety of scents and sizes. It’s an all-natural product with Avocado Oil and Aloe Vera that you spray onto your body to condition and moisturize. Plus, it’s silky smooth and smells delicious! I think I might actually be addicted to this lotion and a number of other Cheekie Bath and Body products.

Mosquito Protection

Unfortunately, in Saskatchewan, mosquitos are a serious nuisance especially in the evening when you want to enjoy dinner outdoors, a round of golf, or just sit around the campfire. I definitely do not want to be applying DEET to my skin on a regular basis so I’ve had to do some research on products that will effectively repel these pesky bloodsuckers…emphasis on effectively repel.

One local product that I’ve been using for years, and have found is an effective repellant, is the Summer Mist Tropical Escape. Formerly known as the Coconut Lime Summer Spray, it’s an incredibly moisturizing spray-on lotion made right here in Saskatchewan. While it is not advertised as a “bug spray” it does the trick and it doesn’t smell awful like those DEET sprays do. There are a few local shops like Body Fuel Organics that carry the Summer Mist but if you simply google this product, you will find it available in shops all over the world.

Make Your Own Essential Oil Bug Spray

I’m a big fan of Young Living Essential Oils and while I’m not an expert oiler, I do follow my friend Erin over at @thehealthyroadwitherin and try many of her essential oil hacks.

A while back she shared her recipe for bug spray which I have also made and can confirm that it works and smells amazing! I made a few batches for friends and family this summer and everyone has been raving about it. Here is the recipe I used:

Bug Spray

In a 4 oz glass or metal spray bottle add:

40 drops citronella

30 drops peppermint

20 drops rosemary

10 drops spearmint

2 tablespoons witch hazel

2 tablespoons purified water

Whether you’re hanging out at the pool, enjoying a BBQ in the backyard or camping in the forest, be sure to pack these essential products in your beach bag to help keep your skin protected this summer.

While there are often times that I include affiliate links in my posts, this post is not one of those times! I genuinely love all of these products and I do not benefit from you purchasing any of them. Your skin will benefit from using all of these skincare products though!
